An Exceptional Coffee Experience at Kelowna’s Newest Bean Scene in Rutland

November 20, 2009

full version (short version below)

I sat down with Deborah Synnot, one of the owners of Kelowna’s newest Bean Scene coffee shop in Rutland (207 Rutland Road N) to talk about what sets her coffee shop apart. I never realized how much care and attention went into my cup of coffee (tall decaf americano) or that coffee could be such an art. I think you’ll find this video really interesting.

The Kelowna Bean Scene is really world class, head and shoulders above anyone else in the Okanagan for quality. Hopefully they set an example for the other cafes in our area. The only cafe in the Okanagan that has coffee on par with the best in Vancouver.

In response to the comment left by Okanagan Coffee Blog. Your review of our coffee houses on your website was much appreciated. Not due to the fact that the review was favorable but more for the fact that you noticed all the right things and asked all the relevant questions. To have someone in the area that approaches a review from a knowledgeable and objective viewpoint really gives us a feeling of encouragement. I was impressed with your understanding of how espresso is the key to evaluating a coffee house. There is no doubt that a shop’s care and attention in their espresso extraction and equipment maintenance is the true indicator as to how they do everything else. For the record, Espresso Graf is comprised of 5 origins, you had it right, just add a bit of Tanzanian. I also roast it in a “Northern Italian Style” in order to showcase it’s sweetness and acidity. Thanks again, we are always available to talk coffee so feel free to contact us anytime. Let us know if we can help you in your coffee quest.

Thanks for the feedback Grant and Bean Scene. My visit to the downtown shop was like breath of fresh air! Bean Scene, do you have an email address I might be able to reach you at? I do have some questions about origins and sourcing to bounce off you. I can be reached at okanagancoffeeblog(at)gmail(dot)com. Thanks!

PS-If you’d like to repost your comment above on my review of your shop, or post a similar one that would be very cool. Part of the reason I started the blog was to open up a dialogue about coffee in the Okanagan, so any industry interaction would be very cool.
